30th Anniversary Micro
Action Series - ALIEN vs PREDATOR
As soon as I found out about Microman figures based on the creatures
from the movie Alien vs Predator, I decided to get them all. The
biggest source of excitement for me was the Alien queen figure. I hoped
it'd be a large format Microman, but it's much the same size as any
other Microman. Even so, it packs in the detail! All the figures are
very well crafted and full of detail, both molded and painted. The
paint job on the Predators' skin is particularly impressive.
The Alien Queen
should obviously be the highlight of the collection and, being
completely honest, the only disappointment specific to the AvP range is
that the queen is the same size as the other figures. For scale, she
does come with a tiny Predator and two eggs - one open, one closed -
but these are her only accessories. An egg sac might have been nice,
but would probably have been unwieldy and excessively expensive to
produce.
She is very well articulated, with all the usual Microman joints adapted for Alien physiology. The head is very impressive because, underneath the crest (which, somewhat disappointingly, is made of soft rubber rather than hard plastic) is a lever to control her telescopic inner jaw. The crest is painted to give the impression of iridescence on the shell, which almost works. Unfortunately, once removed, the crest can be difficult to keep back in place - the slightest jolt to mine will make it fall off.
The extra set of arms are on ball joints with tiny, delicate hinges on the elbows. Overall, this is beautifully detailed... if you like this sort of thing.
Just
like 'mother' the warrior Alien is impressively detailed. It's obvious
that a lot of careful thought went into designing these figures, as the
head is topped by a layer of transparent rubber, showing through to
molded plastic detail 'inside' the head. All things considered, the AvP
version of the Alien is the closest to Giger's original of any of the
movies.
It's possible that the inner jaw is meant to be slightly telescopic, but it's made of soft rubber, and mine won't budge. Obivously, there are no extra hands or feet, but the Alien warrior comes with several accessories nonetheless. There's an egg (which can be displayed as either open or closed), a facehugger (which looks as though it will fit over any standard Microman head) and a chestburster.
This is very impressive for its size.
The 'Scar' Predator
comes with an impressive array of weapons, including a very good (for
the size) representation of the shoulder cannon. Myriad blades can be
attached to the wrists, including two different sizes of the double
claw (extended version shown).
The mask is removable, and can be replaced by a 'roaring' face, and there are three different hand styles. The dreads are soft rubber, and don't tend to interfere with posing of the figure or the cannon. It seems as though the chest armour can be removed, though I haven't tried, in case it's not...
The 'Celtic'
Predator shows off even more detail in the molding, with the most
complex mask of the three. Other than this, he's identical to the
'Scar' version in terms of armour and armaments.
He comes with different replacement face, though - his mouth is
closed.
The 'Elder'
Predator comes with almost no accessories - only the selection of
bladed implements which come with all the Predator figures. This one
comes with the fewest accessories - no shoulder cannon, and only a few
of the blades. He also has no additional head, as his mask sits on his
shoulder as part of his armour.
The cape, much like the Batman figure capes, is soft rubber rather
than fabric. The downside is that it does tend to weigh him down. The
upside is that it can be uses as a rest to improve the figure's balance.
